Johnson Takes 2nd at State
Saturday, February 16, 2008

Taylor Johnson in the finals at Mat Classic XX.
Taylor Johnson took 2nd place in the 171 lb. weight class this weekend at Mat Classic XX. After pinning his first opponent and getting a shutout in his second match on Friday, Taylor had to face Jacob Connor of Mountain View on Saturday morning to get into the finals. Just as he has been all year long, Taylor remained focused and went on to win handily 10 - 4. In the finals, Taylor came up short against 3 time state placer and former state champion, Eric Starks from Battleground High School. This was just the second time a Kentlake Wrestler had made it to the finals. It was Johnson's second medal at state having placed 6th at 171 in 2007. Although Kentlake qualified 7 wrestlers to state this year, Taylor was the only Falcon to make it to the second day. Fellow seniors Zack Callahan and Jason Bandy finished out their High School Wrestling careers on Friday with some outstanding opponents. Kentlake will return state participants Jeff Harjehausen, Austin Carrillo, Ben Ritchie, and Greg Eley for the 2008 - 2009 campaign. For complete results see the
2008 Mat Classic XX Brackets.

Ritchie Wins Civil War Tourney at TJ
Saturday, January 27, 2008

Ben Ritchie goes for the takedown.
Sophomore Ben Ritchie won the 140 lb. weight class at the JV Tournament hosted by Thomas Jefferson High School over the weekend. Ben had to work every minute of every match for this championship. Every one of his opponents managed to go the distance with Ben. In fact, before the finals, the highest point spread over his opponents was just 6 points. However, in the Finals, Ben put an exclamation point on the day by winning big over Jerry Doran from Decatur H.S. 17 - 5. Ricky Sturza was the only other Falcon to place in the 16-man bracket tournament. Ricky placed 5th at the 125 lb. weight class. For complete brackets, click here.

Tahoma Edges Kentlake in Thriller 37 - 31
Thursday, January 17, 2008

Considered underdogs in this league cross-town match, Kentlake put up a tremendous fight
against the 7th ranked Bears from Tahoma. The Falcons were strong throughout the evening receiving pins from Taylor Johnson (171), Tyler Potts (112), and Rick Sturza (125). But the most exciting match of the evening came in the fourth match when Kentlake's heavyweight Tim Montalvo faced Tahoma's Elijah Ruhl. In what seemed like a mismatch in size (Ruhl is 6'5" to Montalvo's 5'6"), the match started with Montalvo striking early to get Ruhl on his back with a head-and-arm. Ruhl, who was a state participant in 2007, managed to escape the pin when time ran out in the first period. Ruhl then came back in the second by scoring on Montalvo. The match came down to a close call by the official in the closing seconds of the third round in which it seemed like either wrestler was close to scoring. In the end, points were awarded to Ruhl and the Tahoma heavyweight won 13-8. The dual meet was tied 31 - 31 going into the final match of the evening in which 160 lbs. wrestlers Greg Eley (Jr.) from Kentlake and Tahoma's Nick Bayer (So.) squared off. Bayer, a state participant at 145 lbs. in 2007 came away with a pin to seal the victory for the Bears. Fan support was strong at Kentlake's home gymnasium, and it was impressive for everyone to see such a great High School match-up. Here are the complete results:

103 — Jeff Harjehausen, KL won by forfeit.
112 — Tyler Potts, KL, p. Seybold 2:36.
119 — Higa, T, p. Friant 1:47.
125 — Sturza, KL, p. De Leon, 4:48.
130 — Tyler Lamb, T, dec. Callahan 6-2.
135 — Rea, T, maj. dec. Fajarillo 16-7.
140 — Tao, T, dec. Carillo 15-8.
145 — Bandy, KL, dec. Bubban 8-6.
152 — Whitton, T, p. Cavanagh 1:24.
160 — Bayer, T, p. Greg Eley 5:30.
171 — Johnson, KL, p. Nead 1:10.
189 — Knudtsen, T, p. Brian Eley 1:10.
215 — Hogan, KL, maj. dec. Eager 10-1.
285 — Ruhl, T, dec. Montalvo 13-8.

Johnson 3rd, Eley 8th at Pac-Coast
Saturday, December 29, 2007

For the second time this season, Kentlake competed in a Multi-state, 32-man bracket tournament. The Pacific Coast Tournament in Vancouver, Washington is always a tough tournament and was a valuable experience for all of the Falcon wrestlers who participated.

In the 171 lbs. weight class, Senior Taylor Johnson lost by just 2 points in the Semi-finals to the eventual champion, Butch Whitaker from Redmond Oregon. Johnson eventually went on to take 3rd by defeating Luke Angevine of Kentwood and Aaron Boyle of Ridgwood in the consolation bracket.

At 160 lbs., Junior Greg Eley faced Kentwood's Lance Larson in the quarter-finals. Larson, who took third at state in the 152 lb. weight class last year, would prove to be too tough for Eley this time out. Larson won this one 8 - 0. Eley, however, would continue to work in the consolation bracket for an 8th place finish. Complete results of the 2007-2008 Pac-Coast Tournament can be found at Washington Wrestling Report.

Two Make it to Second Day at Tri-State
Saturday, December 15, 2007

Since 2004, when coach Pete Reardon began taking his team to the Tri-state Tournament at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene Idaho, getting to the second day of this, the toughest tournament of the season, has been an accomplishment. And this year two wrestlers did just that. Although both fell short of placing, seniors Zach Callahan and Taylor Johnson represented Kentlake High School on Saturday, the final day of the tournament. Johnson came just one point from placing by losing to Landis Mills of Republic 6 - 5 to get into the medal round. Complete brackets can be found at Washington Wrestling Report.
