Carrillo Places 8th at State Saturday, February 21,
2009
|
Senior Austin Carrillo finished
his High School wrestling career as a
state placer and represented Kentlake on the podium at Mat Classic
XXI. After losing his opening match 2-0 against senior
David Marquez from Walla Walla High School, Austin showed great
character by pinning his next two opponents in order to
advance to the medal rounds on Saturday. Carrillo lost his
first match on Saturday against Thomas Pfeiffer of Moses
Lake 10 - 6. That set up a re-match with David
Marquez for 7th and 8th where Austin lost 12 - 4 in a match
that was much closer than what the score
indicated. To see the full 145 lb. bracket, click here .

| Carrillo,
Eley Sub-District Champions; Team Takes 4th Saturday, February 7,
2009
|
Kentlake Seniors Austin Carrillo and Greg Eley are perfect
in post-season as both wrestlers won their respective weight
classes over the weekend. Carrillo was no stranger to his
opponent, John Buban of Tahoma. Just 2 weeks earlier, he lost
to Buban by a score of 11 - 4. In a match that was close
throughout, Austin gutted out the win 6 - 4. It took Greg Eley
just 29 seconds to pin Michael Karpstein from Auburn in his
championship match. Both Carrillo and Eley will have #1 seeds
going into this Friday and Saturday's Regional Tournament
at Snohomish High School. Zach Hogan also made it to the
finals but lost to last year's 3A State Champion at 171, Jake
Swartz. Other Kentlake Wrestlers advancing
include Colton Marlowe, Jeff Harjehausen, Tyler Potts,
Sean Cavanagh & Alex McMahon for a total of 8 wrestlers
going to Regionals.

Kentlake Wrestlers at the 2009 SPSL North Sub-District
Tournament | Falcons Victorious in Senior Night Double
Dual
Wednesday, January 28,
2009
|
Kentlake wrestlers had their work cut out for them on this
night. Both Kent Meridian and Kentridge came with strong teams
that are much improved from years past both in strength and in
numbers. After the KM - KR match, Senior Night festivities
took place with 12 seniors taking center stage. Each wrestler
came out to be recognized along with their parents. A
slideshow was presented showing pictures of each wrester both
on and off the mat.
Then... it was time for business... After Kentlake won the opener against
Kent Meridian 46 - 29, it was time for the final match. The
Kentlake – Kentridge match came down to the wire. Kentlake was
down by 15 points with three matches to go when seniors Mike
Haugen, Stephen Fajarillo, and Austin Carrillo pulled one out
of the fire for the Falcons. Haugen started it off by
recording a pin while Fajarillo narrowed the gap with a Major
Decision. Then Senior and Captain Austin Carrillo Pinned his
opponent to give the Falcons the win against their cross town
rivals. |

Kentwood Takes
Cov-Town Thursday, January 22,
2009
The annual Cov-Town Throwdown was as
exciting as ever this year. Fans packed the Gym at
Kentwood High School for an outstanding dual meet between cross-town
rivals. The match of the evening was between Stephen Fajarillo
and Kentwood's Matthew Gordon. This one went back and forth the
entire 6 minutes. "Faha" seemed to gain determination as the match
went on pulling out a clutch takedown in the winding seconds to
break what was a tie match to come out ahead 8 - 6.

Kentlake JV Tournament Runs
Smooth Saturday, January 17, 2009
The
3rd annual Kentlake J.V. Tournament was held this weekend with a
record number of participants. Kentlake coaching staff, parents, and
the Kentlake wrestlers themselves had their work cut out for them to
provide a quality tournament for over 200 wrestlers. And work they
did! And the result was a very smoothly run tournament that helped
provide these wrestlers with 3 more matches of experience to build
toward becoming the best wrestlers they can be.
Among the
many people who helped make this year's tournament a success (and
I'm sure we are missing someone in this list)
are:
Tickets: Peggy Kessel, Tom Bogle, Stacy
Heric, Dal, Carol Sturza
Concessions: Denise K, Denise F, Heide T,
Shelley Trial, Donna Gilomen, Meribeth Brooks, Carol Cowan, Kelle
Talbot, Patti H
Cookies for coaches: Lisa Morgan, Peggy
Kessel, Ms. Marsters, Lorrie McMahon, Meribeth Brooks
Bracketting: Rich F., Bruce H., Brian Gilomen,
Cameron Carrillo, Jesse Gilomen, Taylor Firman, Tara Reardon
All of our volunteers were
fantastic! Thank You!
Excitement,
Challenges ahead in 2008 - 2009 Friday, December 5, 2008
Coach Reardon's
goal each year is to find the best competition the Northwest has to
offer. This year will be no exception. Says Coach Reardon:
"This year varsity will be traveling to Coeur d’Alene for the
Tri-State Tourney and to Spokane for the U-High Tourney. A new
tourney that has been added to our schedule is the Panther Classic
at Snohomish High School. There are also many great wrestling
opportunities for our JV wrestlers who will have the opportunity to
wrestle in five of their own tournaments!" One of those 5 JV
tournaments will be Kentlake's own 2nd annual tournament that will
be a major fundraiser for the team.
Kentlake returns State
participants Jeff Harjehausen, Austin Carrillo, Ben Ritchie, and
Greg Eley and Regional participants Tyler Potts, Rick Sturza, and
Sean Cavanaugh.
And among the list of challenges
for 2008 - 2009 will be a major change in the Regional tournament.
For many years, Kentlake and their other SPSL North counterparts
have joined the Kingco league for their Regional
tournament. However, for this year's Regional tournament, the SPSL
North will join with the Wesco league which includes 4A powerhouse
Lake Stevens. And the SPSL North will see the return of Auburn and
Auburn Riverside who are always very tough.
